Calling All Thoresby Colliery Retired Miners & Ex-Employees
The committee of the Thoresby Colliery Retired Miners Social Fund are pleased to announce that a social evening / reunion and a party to be held on 6th December at Forest Town Arena. So, if you are a retired miner or ex-employee that used to work at Thoresby Colliery or you know someone who did why not find out more about the free Christmas events they are holding later this year. Simply call 01623 624678 or visit the Forest Town Arena between 10am – 12noon on a Thursday. Places are booked on a first come first served basis so please be quick to avoid disappointment.
Christmas Donations Needed
The Focus Point on Vale Road in Mansfield Woodhouse needs your help. They are hoping to put on a winter wonderland later this year for the local children to go to and see Santa and receive a gift from him. To do this they need donations of toys, books, decorations, wrapping paper etc etc. Anything that will help them make it a very special day for the children would be greatly appreciated. Tapas & Talk
On Tuesday 22nd October from 6pm – 8pm a new initiative is being launched by the team behind One Walk and One Conversation who have teamed up with the Capo Lounge in Mansfield. It’s called ‘Tapas & Talk’, the evening involves people coming together at the Capo Lounge with a lovely friendly bunch of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for a conversation plus food and drink if you wish. The group of friendly activists (as they are known) will be in the bar waiting to chat to you and your friends. They are from all kinds of backgrounds with all kinds of abilities and all they want with you is a conversation. All food and drinks have to be paid for on the night individually but everyone is welcome to go along and get talking! Please go along and show your support. The event will be repeated on the first Tuesday of each month going forward which means the next one after this will be on Tuesday 5th November. Rainworth Riders Presentation Night
On Friday 25th October from 7.30pm – late the Rainworth Riders are holding a presentation night at The Venue (formerly the Potters) on Kirklington Road in Rainworth. They will be presenting their cheques and revealing how much they raised by cycling to Skegness earlier this year all in aid of 2 local youngsters, Rosie Stone and Mason burrows, who needed support and financial assistance for equipment and home adaptations due to their illnesses / disabilities. Following the big reveal and presentation there will be live music from ‘Red River Crossing’, a raffle and a disco too! Admission is free of charge to all and everyone is welcome to go along and help the riders celebrate their achievement.
Sherwood Observatory Open Evening
On Saturday 26th October from 6.45pm onwards the Mansfield & Sutton Astronomical Society will be opening their doors at the Sherwood Observatory on Coxmoor Road in Sutton in Ashfield for everyone to go along and view the magic of the night sky, weather permitting of course. You will be able to view the sky through a variety of their powerful telescopes and learn all about our solar system. There will be rolling talks throughout the evening on astronomy and you will even get the chance to hold and view meteorites. Space themed memorabilia will be on sale and refreshments will be available. Admission is £6 for adults and £2 for under 16’s, please note that all under 16’s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Toilet facilities and free car parking are on site plus there is full disabled access. Please make sure you wear warm sensible clothing. Fundraising Car Boot Sale
On Sunday 27th October and on the last Sunday of each month following there is a fundraising car boot sale happening at the Seventh Day Advent Church in Mansfield Woodhouse. Car booters can arrive from 8am and the public from 9am, the sale runs through until 12pm. Everyone is welcome to go along either as a seller or a buyer. Do you think you could sing with the Mansfield & District Male Voice Choir? They are currently looking to recruit some new singers, both old and young voices to extend both their repertoire and their reach. The choir performs various times over the course of the year at a variety of functions and events. They are currently celebrating their 75th anniversary year and would like some new voices to join them. Family Halloween Night
On Saturday 2nd November from 7pm - late there is a family Halloween night happening at the Triple S Snooker Club on Mansfield Road in Skegby. Admission is free to call members; you can join as a new member on the night. Children are welcome but must be supervised. There will be a free buffet, a fancy dress competition for both adults and children with some great prizes and a disco too! Why not go along for a spooktacular night of family fun??
Sutton Rambling Club – Why Not Join Them For A Walk??
On Sunday 3rd November the Sutton Rambling Club will be walking around the Ladybower dams in Derbyshire. It promises to be a great walk in fantastic company with great scenery, what more could you ask for?? As always there will be a coach available to take walkers to and from the walk, it picks up at The Staff of Life public house in Sutton in Ashfield at 9.15am followed by a pick up on Stockwell Gate in Mansfield at 9.30am. Dementia Support Group
On Tuesday 5th November from 1.30pm – 3.30pm the Forget Me Not Dementia Support Group are holding one of their monthly meetings. The meeting is open to everyone who suffers with memory problems such as dementia as well as their family, friends and carers. This meeting is held on the 1st Tuesday of each month at St John’s Church Hall on Skegby Road in Kirkby Woodhouse. At the meeting you’ll find support, friendship and the chance to talk to others experiencing the same thing as you. There will only be 1 further meeting in 2019 following this one which will be held on 3rd December. Everyone is invited to go along, whether it’s for the full 2 hours or just 10 minutes, simply call in. As well as the monthly meetings the group also organise day trips and outings which could be of interest to you, why not go along to find out more?
Fundraising Pop-up Ladies Fashion Shop
On Friday 8th November starting at 7.30pm there is a ladies fashion show pop-up shop at Ravenshead Village Hall on Vernon Crescent in Ravenshead. It’s your chance to shop for your favourite high street brands at 50% off or more. The event has been organised by the Mansfield & District Soroptimist Group with funds being raised for The Eve Appeal and The British Acoustic Neuroma Association. Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are £5 per person including a welcome drink. Tickets must be purchased in advance and can be booked now by calling 01623 490622. As well as the fashion show and sale there will be a raffle, Everyone is welcome to go along.
Your local PDSA shop on Low Street in Sutton in Ashfield needs your donations of clothing, DVD’s. CD’s, bags, shoes etc. The PDSA are the UK’s oldest and largest animal welfare charity. Donations can be dropped off at the shop between 9.30am – 4pm Monday – Saturday; you can drive around to the back of the shop to drop larger donations off at their back door if you wish. Collections can be made locally but must be for 6 bin liners full or more to cover travel costs. Please support your local PDSA charity shop if you can.
Warsop Infotech Group Celebration Event
On Tuesday 12th November from 12pm – 4pm the Warsop Infotech Group are holding a celebration event to mark 25 years of providing support, drop in sessions, internet access and courses to the Warsop Parish and surrounding communities. Winter Wonderland Charity Ball
On Saturday 23rd November there is a Winter Wonderland Charity Ball happening at The Nottingham Belfry Hotel. Tickets are £40 per person and are on sale now. There is a drinks reception starting at 7pm followed by dinner and dancing. All funds raised from this event are going to help the patients of the Haematology department at Nottingham City Hospital which looks after people with illnesses such as Leukaemia, Lymphoma and other blood disorders. The Children’s Bereavement Centre is looking for volunteers across our area. They are looking for volunteer bereavement support workers to offer one to one support, counselling and group activities in welcoming and safe venues throughout Nottinghamshire. The minimum age for applicants is 21. They are looking for people from various backgrounds with experience in social work, social care, healthcare or teaching. You must have knowledge of safeguarding children and young people. All they need is a few hours per week of your time to help many youngsters and families dealing with bereavement.
